Cryolipolysis, often referred to as "fat freezing," is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure used to reduce localized areas of body fat. It works by exposing the targeted fat cells to controlled cooling, which causes them to undergo a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Over time, the body's natural processes eliminate the dead fat cells, resulting in a gradual reduction in the thickness of the treated area.
The procedure is based on the principle that fat cells are more sensitive to cold temperatures than surrounding tissues, such as skin, muscle, and nerves. During the cryolipolysis procedure, a specialized device is applied to the skin over the area of concern. This device uses suction to draw the fatty tissue between cooling panels, where the fat cells are then exposed to cooling temperatures for a specific duration.
Cryolipolysis is considered a safe and non-invasive alternative to surgical fat reduction methods like liposuction. It's important to note that while the procedure can lead to a noticeable reduction in fat, it may not result in as dramatic or immediate changes as surgical procedures. Multiple sessions might be required to achieve the desired results, and individual responses can vary.
Cryolipolysis is typically used to reduce stubborn fat in areas such as the abdomen, love handles, thighs, and upper arms.
It is important to note that cryolipolysis is not a weight loss procedure and is not suitable for people who are significantly overweight or obese. It is also not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, and is best used as a complement to a healthy lifestyle for people who have areas of stubborn fat that they are having difficulty reducing through diet and exercise alone.
Researchers found that Cryolipolysis reduced the treated fat layer by as much as 25%. With little to no downtime it has become increasingly popular in North America.
Cryolipolysis was developed at Harvard University. The inventors studied children eating popsicles. It was discovered these children who ate popsicles had dimples in their cheeks. R, Rox Anderson, MD and Dieter Manstein, MD realized that these popsicles were helping to eliminate the small fat cell pockets in the cheeks of the children.
